The qathet Regional Depot in Powell River is where the Ocean Plastic Depot network began. It gives residents and community groups a free place to drop off marine debris from shoreline cleanups across the qathet region.
First-time users email qathetdepot@oceanlegacy.ca to set up a short orientation at the depot.
Learn what is accepted and how to sort it before your cleanup.
Bring your sorted marine debris to the Resource Recovery Centre, Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 5 pm.
Collected material goes to Ocean Legacy's facility in Richmond to be recycled.
Depots accept marine plastic such as rope, netting, crab pots, buoys, foam floats, dock foam, clean polystyrene, tires and wetsuits.
Dock and aquaculture flotation foam is the most common item dropped off here. Check the sorting guide for what the depot can take.
Opened in October 2020 in partnership with the qathet Regional District, this was the first Ocean Plastic Depot in Canada. It started out at Augusta Recyclers and now has a permanent home at the regional district’s Resource Recovery Centre on Marine Avenue.
In its first years the depot diverted more than 85,000 kg of plastic marine debris from the landfill. Rope and hard plastics collected here are recycled into pellets and made into products such as plastic lumber.
